Joseph Seamon Cotter Jr was born on 2 September 1895 in Louisville Kentucky USA. He started his education from his sister teaching him to read and write. He graduated from Louisville Central High School in 1911. Joseph then went onto Fisk University in Nashville. He dedicated his life to education and teaching. He was also a journalist and poet who created protest poems relating to the Harlem Renaissance period. This period was about black American people moving into urban areas and expressing themselves. He was inspired by black American soldiers fighting in the First World War. He was also inspired by his father Joseph Seamon Cotter Sr who was a poet and teacher. In the last part of his life he wrote protest plays. Joseph Seamon Cotter Jr died from tuberculosis in Louisville in 1919. Tuberculosis is caused by poor sanitation. Joseph Seamon Cotter Jr. was 24 when he died.
